“A Vanishing Thunder: Extinct and Threatened American Birds” by Adrien Stoutenburg and illustrated by John Schoenherr. Published by The Natural History Press, The American Museum of Natural History, in 1967. First and only edition. Very rare book.

This book is one of the first “Conservation Books.” Geared to teenagers, this was an introduction to the tragedy of people caused extinction or near extinction of North American Birds.

Passenger Pigeon

California Condor (near but not extinct)
Whooping Crane (near but not extinct)

Wonderful illustrations. Great, engaging text.

Dust cover has some chips at edges. Book itself in Fine Condition.

This should be collectible and makes a great introduction to a grade school or high school kid on the beauty of threatened and expunged wildlife in America.
